The Night Shuttle Song

The night comes down on the world like a memory,
Fuzzy and gray with its twilight delivery,
Shrouding the streets and the trees and the stairs,
Crossing the world like a prayer.
Stars and clouds weave their way across everything,
Bright little threads and wide shifting scarves,
And I'm a night-shuttle, my star's on the wing,
Threading its way through the scene the night carves.

Refrain
One star for destiny, one cloud for change,
One thread for scarves weaving through the night range:
Weaving us, weaving us, everything's art-
A pattern so deep that we know it by heart.

My mother's a weaver, she works through the night,
Plotting her patterns so the threads lay just right.
My sister's a spinner, she spins until dawn,
Twining her fingers with dreams.
With Mother's swift fingers directing my flight,
Sister's strong threads spun of darkness and light,
Guided by pattern, protected by love,
I can't lose my way through this maze up above.

Refrain

Bridge:
Somebody gave me a scarf laced with starlight,
Somebody sent me the blue of her eyes,
Somebody wove me a mantle of music,
To sing in my dreams as I dance the night sky.

Refrain

Look at this thread; it's as plain as a housecat.
It's humble and solid and sure as a sabbat.
Here's one so bright I cannot bear to look:
Its silver sparks back from the moon.
Stars and clouds weave their way across everything,
Bright little threads and wide shifting scarves.
Guided by pattern, protected by love,
They can't lose their way through this maze up above.

Refrain

Notes: For awhile there, everybody seemed to be giving me scarves. So I was thinking of a way to tie the scarves into a song one night. It must have been after a moon, because I was watching the way our high priestess moved through the crowd at her house, and I was thinking of her, after everyone had gone home, cleaning up and puttering around her house. I played the song for her once, but I don't think she knows it's her song.
