Like Scheherezade
Out of a blinding desert dust storm
Tell an oasis out of air
Sound of a tambourine inviting
Call me beside you if you dare
I am a storyteller's daughter
You are a king without a crown
I am the instrument of laughter
You'll never breathe until you drown
Refrain:
Sing you to sleep like Scheherezade
Wake your curiosity
Trap you with tales like Scheherezade
You'll never want to leave me
Bring me to rooms of silk and splendor
Veil me with jewels, kohl my eyes
I am a walking sense of wonder
Beautiful, patient-- and streetwise
Tell me the rules of our engagement
Tell me you'll kill me at sunrise
I'll be your captive entertainment
I'll hold the fire in your eyes
Refrain
Bridge:
Every day a different story
Every night a new plotted knife
I have no time for tears or worry
Trusting my tongue to buy my life
Repeat Refrain
I am so weary of this calling
Tales that were never learned by rote
Better this desperate exhaustion
Than a king's knife upon my throat
Fearful and scared, I keep on telling
Watching for signs that I've touched your heart
Thousands of sentences all spelling
Whether my life is worth my art
Refrain
Tag:
Terrified just like Scheherezade
One breath ahead of the sword
Spinning my fate like Scheherezade
Living my life ----- by the word
Notes: I have always been fascinated by the story of Scheherezade. I think I am a little like Scheherezade, hence the title. I feel that I work very hard to get and keep people's attention, especially people whose opinions mean a lot to me, and I often stress quite a bit over whether I can keep people's interest on any number of levels. So I was just thinking of how I am like Scheherezade, and this song sort of poured out, with a little break in the middle. Finished 4/20/03
